This column’s name is a play on the Shepard Tone, the superposition of sine waves separated by octaves. The Shepard Tone appears to continually ascend or descend in pitch while in reality the note stays the same, going neither higher nor lower. The mere existence of the Shepard Tone confirms we hear more than is overtly presented to us. Similarly, this column will explore sounds that are not quite what they seem, things largely overlooked by most mainstream music press, and other less commonly discussed topics.
